Personal Statement
– David | Tasting Our World –
We have always seen life as a series of chapters and now we look forward to the next one –
retirement. We don’t see this as the end of something but the start of something new, something so
incredible it can eclipse everything that went before- and that’s a very tall order!
We have always been fascinated by the world, the different cultures, their history and how, when you get to the core of it, we mostly want the same things in life. We both enjoy food, its history, how it defines people, how its prepared and most of all how it makes us feel happy. If food is the fuel of life and people are what define it then its our shared history that binds us all together.
So that is it; Food, Culture and History. That’s our our next chapter as we set out on the journey of a lifetime to drive around the world.
We are at a different stage to many who embark on this journey so our blogs may appeal to people differently. We have bought a new Land Cruiser 300 to do the journey and whilst it’s equipped for camping we will mostly seek out great hotels to stay at, focus on local cuisine, how to cook it and see what we can learn about cultures that we pass through. Because we are doing this in our, so called, retirement years rather than in our formative ones we can afford the better things in life as compensation for not being so focused on the more active things. If you want to see long treks or rock climbing this isn’t the blog for you. If you want to get some tips for a great holiday off the beaten tourist track, get the inside track on food and dispel some prejudices about the peoples of the world and learn about what binds us, then join us.
David is an engineer born in the UK but now a 20-year citizen of the wonderful country of Australia. Essex to Perth has been a long but great journey. David ran his first business at the age of 30 in the UK and for the last 20 years has run ASX listed companies in Australia. Whilst he has travelled the world as a businessman he has always been on a tight and pre-determined schedule. Now, for the first time he can loiter, take time to breath the air, understand the culture and love the food, although he did do a lot of that in the past! David wants to understand the people of the world better.
Jill has had an interesting and diverse career, starting out with the Ministry of Defence in London, working for a merchant bank, and finally co-owning and running a small home staging business in Perth. Somewhere in the middle of it all moving homes regularly within the UK, Italy and finally Australia to follow David’s work, raising two beautiful daughters and watching them fly the nest to build successful lives of their own. I am looking forward to our next adventure, taking to the road and seeing where it takes us, what we can learn and just having fun!
